Somehow it’s already been a year since Kim and I’ve been married and to celebrate, she surprised me with a trip to Northern California. A few weeks before our anniversary she told me some of what was planned so we decided roll in a one day trip to San Francisco before our long weekend in Big Sur. Having never been to Big Sur before, I was stoked to know that we’d have three days all to ourselves to explore and take in the scenery.
We took off from Southern California Thursday after work and reached San Francisco a little after midnight. After checking in to Chateau Wallace, the haunted mansion on Scott St, we settled in and called it a night. Since all we do is eat while we’re in San Francisco, we took the drive down to Eats with some of my NorCal loves, Marc Chow and Father Apollo Wallace. We ate like animals and then met up with the brothers Mar, Tim and Matt as well as Andy Von Wong for some much needed ice cream at Smitten. After dessert we headed back to Chateau Wallace where I dominated everyone at Star Wars pinball and then made our way back out to feed our gluttonous faces at San Tung. I have no clue what we did after dinner but at some point we ended up at another dessert place, Akiba, where we fed our fat faces again, this time with some amazing ice cream, strawberry and bread concoction. Trust me, it was amazing. We departed feeling disgusting and full and headed to some other haunted place where we all felt equally strange inside… maybe it was the spirits, maybe it was the stomach aches.
The following morning Kim had an appointment to get her hair cut downtown so while she was doing that, I decided to roam around Union Square and play the tourist role… even though I’ve been there at least fifty times before. A quick stop at Twin Peaks and then we hit the road and made our way to Big Sur!
When we finally hit Big Sur, it was just as amazing as we thought it would be. The ocean and the forest covered with fog around one turn and then open skies around the next made the journey that much better. I’ll spare you the details about the rest of the trip because I’m sure most of you have already stopped reading but the cliff notes version includes a trip to Los Lobos State Park, a late night relaxation session in the hot mineral springs at the Esalen Institute, an AMAZING stay at the Glen Oaks Big Sur cottages (forest view,) and just some good old quality time with my lady.
A big “thank you” to Julia Vaughn of AVGVSTA & AVGVSTVS for coming through her Skulliosis bracelets right before the trip as well, Kim loved them!
Overall, even though the trip was short, I had an amazing time. A quick trip to San Francisco to see my lovers, a great long weekend alone with the finest piece of meat on the planet and just a good time altogether. Kim Moore Tjin, thank you for an amazing first year… here’s to three hundred more!
